The New Amazon
I love the raw, untamed aesthetic behind Gisele Ganne's AW 11/12 collection entitled 'The New Amazon.' The jewellery evokes an almost tribal feel as you suspect these carcass pendants are the result of ritual slaughter and dipped in gold and silver to preserve their mythical power.
Gisele's infamous birds of prey return this season as eagles land upon fingers and extend from chains. These creatures are given a regal quality as porcelain emerald and darkened rose quartz hats rest upon their heads. Ensuring her signature macabre tone remains, knuckle dusters are set upon a bed of blackened roses. Deer antlers are strung onto stranded necklaces like victory prizes, as man conquers 'beast'. Toxic skull emblems dangle from ears appearing on staffs which resemble crosses. Excessive use of chains prompt thoughts of imprisonment and shackles used for restraint.
For some reason my mind can't help but wander to Skull Island the more I reflect on this collection. I can clearly picture the natives brandishing such pieces as their trophies, as they sacrifice Anne who awaits her faith at the hands of King Kong. The hair extending from some of the pieces furthers this voodoo like imagery in my mind, as I long for one of the gold plated bronze bubble rings.
