TWENTY6 issue G

GISELE GANNE

Gisele Ganne’s jewellery is an evocation of death, mourning and divorce. Each pieces tells a story which is inspired by Victorian mourning jewellery, old and ethnic customs, urban legends and historical events…
Based in London, Gisele Ganne graduated from the Royal College of Art and worked for several well known names such as Cacharel, Tatty Devine, Carolina Bucci and Stephen Webster before going alone. Since releasing her first collection she has already featured in world wide press and been seen on celebrities such as Florence Welch, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Cheryl Cole, Yasmin and Eve.
What were/are your ambitions and aspirations at the age of 26?

When I turned 26, it was few days before my degree show at the Royal College of Art. I was so stressed, but the only thing I could dream of and hope for was to be where I am now - lucky enough to make a living from my passion!
Pick a word beginning with the letter 'G' which best sums you up...
GLAMOUROUS-GOTH
I think it is a good word to define my style and my jewellery. I have thousands of images filed under INSPIRATION but could equally be filed under GLAMOROUS-GOTH!

For each letter of the alphabet, pick a word followed by a sentence that inspires you...

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
My idol - he was a genius. If there was one person to speak to that was no longer with us, it would definitely be him.
BEERS
Beers with my friends! Always the best way to forget the stress of the day.
CHEESE & CHANEL
Some of the best things that France produces, including my dad’s goat cheese, which is the best ever btw!
DIVORCE & DEATH
The inspiration behind my first jewellery collection.
ELEGANCE
Givenchy by Ricardo Tisci.
FRANCE
Best country in the world. Even if I live in London, France will always be in my heart.
GLAMOROUS GOTH
Glamorous goth chic... my style, my jewellery!
HOME
Home sweet home. I am actually looking for a new place, house hunting in London can be hell!
iPHONE
How did we ever manage without them! Checking my mails on my phone is the first thing I do when I wake up and the last thing I do before bed.
JEWELLERY
An outfit is never complete without jewellery!
KNOWLEDGE
I never have enough, I'm always seeking more. The same for inspiration.
LEATHER
I am obsessed with leather and have way too many leather items in my wardrobe!
MY MUM
My mum is the best women in the world (of course, my dad is the best too)!
NEVER
Never say never, you never know what life will offer.
OBSESSED
Each of my collections starts with an obsession.
PALEONTOLOGY
The gallery of Palaeontology is my favourite place in Paris. I love skulls and skeletons.
QUEENS
Especially the Walt Disney ones - the Queen of Hearts in Alice Wonderland, the Queen in Snow White.
ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART
The school which changed my life.
SISTERS
I have two amazing sisters, we fight like cat and dog but are always there for each other!
TIM BURTON
My other idol - his movies make me dream. I would love to work with him.
UNIQUE
I like to think that my jewellery makes people feel unique.
VOGUE
My proudest moment was to see my jewellery on the glossy pages of the French Vogue! It's like the bible for me and I collect them religiously.
WITCHES
The inspiration behind my new collection. It all started after reading “the Witching Hour” trilogy from Anne Rice.
X-MAS
My favourite family holidays.
YETI
Yeti, vampire, werewolf, ghost... I can read anything about mystic creatures and monsters!
ZZZZZZZ....
Nothing is better than a good night of sleep. I wish I could get more of them!

Jewellery designer Gisele Ganne has left her role as senior silver jewellery designer at Stephen Webster to pursue her own-brand collections.
Ganne joined Stephen Webster in 2008 having studies at the Royal College of Art in London. She also ran her own brand on the side, creating a number of designs including a bird skull ring dubbed the Divorce ring, as well as a collection inspired by mourning jewellery.
She said: “I decide that it was time to focus more on my brand. I am now focusing on Gisele Ganne Ltd and will relaunch the company in October with a new collection.
“I already have a workshop. For now, I will continue making silver statement jewellery and one-off pieces. I have fine jewellery in mind but will be more for the future."
Ganne’s last day with Stephen Webster was yesterday. She had been a key designer of the British jewellery brand’s silver collections, a section of the brand that has been on the rise in the UK, Russia and the US in recent years.
Ganne was named a NexGem in Professional Jeweller's Hot 100 in 2011.
